Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing array of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
