Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.
The real advancement in his skills happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into a few of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played money games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
