Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker player in the world by many of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to learn every little thing he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the adverse comments from other people annihilate his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He started playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a teaching experience and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an undying love for the game of poker. He says that he is picking up skills every single day and is quite abashed about his success. He admits to making blunders in each game of poker and always strives to improve.
Even though Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
