Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to play some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played many hours and lose most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. He was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his logical thinking skills. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of NL holdem.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
